If you want to find a good replacement for your teeth, dental implants are the perfect solution. They hold a crown, bridge or denture the same way as roots hold your teeth in place. Implants are one of the most significant inventions in dentistry. Dentists say that these implants are "the next best thing to your natural teeth." In contrast to a traditional plate or bridge, dental implants are actually anchored to your jaw. After integration with the jawbone, the crown, bridge or denture is then fixed to the implants. This way you get greater stability and, therefore, more effective eating, speaking, smiling and laughing!

A dental implant is very similar to a metal screw that is put into the jaw bone. It is like an anchor for a false tooth or a set of false teeth. Left slide shows the replacement of a lateral incisor with a dental implant retained restoration. Click the image to see the implant.

Crowns and conventional bridges or dentures are not the only options you have when replacing missing teeth. Dental implants often provide a smile that looks and feels very natural. Implants are surgically placed below the gums over a series of appointments. They fuse to the jawbone and act as a base for individual replacement teeth, bridges or a denture.

Stability is guaranteed as implants fuse to your bone. By integrating the implants into your jaw you make your replacement teeth feel more natural. Moreover, some people find the secure fit more convenient than conventional substitutes.

If you want to apply for dental implants, one of the requirements is having healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. After proper examination your dentist will tell you if dental implants can be placed.

Artificial teeth with dental implants look more natural and feel secure. You can also use dental implants to attach full or partial dentures. However, implants are not for everybody. Implants require surgery, that is why patients must be in good health, have healthy gums, have adequate bone to support the implant and be committed to meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental visits.

Earlier dentists would want to keep or replace teeth with such treatments as root canals, bridges, and fixed or removable dentures. Unfortunately, a great number of root canal treated teeth fail, bridges require that healthy adjacent teeth be cut down and removable dentures can often be unstable and require the use of sticky adhesives. A solution to such problems is dental implants, and most of the concerns associated with natural teeth are eliminated, including dental decay.

The surgery of replacement of natural teeth by a dental implant is usually done in less than an hour with only local anesthesia. Normally post-operative discomfort is less than that of a tooth extraction. For aesthetic reasons, it is often possible to have a fixed transitional restoration immediately after implant placement so that you never are without a tooth. A period of healing lasts from three to six months. After the temporary healing abutment is removed from the implant and a final abutment is inserted into the implant. A crown or removable denture is secured to this abutment as the final restoration.

You and only you can decide if you need to get dental implants. The best dentist can tell you whether you can be a candidate for implants. So if you are diagnosed as a viable candidate, you should make a final decision about getting dental implants. Base your decision on what your heart and head say.
